Pumice Flat Group Camp sits in a lodgepole pine forest at about 7,700 feet on the Red's Meadow/Devils Postpile side of the eastern Sierra, a few miles west of the full-service town of Mammoth Lakes and reached via Red's Meadow Road off Minaret/Highway 203. The group area is part of the larger Pumice Flat Campground but is distinct: there are four group campsites total, each set well apart from the others and located fairly close to one of two nearby creeks. Each of these four sites can accommodate both tents and RVs, and every site comes with a picnic table, a campfire ring, and a food-storage locker an important convenience given local wildlife such as black bears, mountain lions, mule deer, pine marten, pika and numerous birds. Note that the access road is narrow and single-lane and is only open in summer, so plan travel and vehicle size accordingly. This spot is a practical base for exploring the Ansel Adams Wilderness, Devils Postpile National Monument and the nearby backcountry: trailheads for the Ansel Adams Wilderness, Pacific Crest Trail and John Muir Trail lie within a few miles, and a mandatory shuttle operates to take hikers to some of those trailheads. Anglers can fish for trout in the nearby lake or the North Fork of the San Joaquin River, and Red's Meadow Pack Station and Resort about 2.5 miles down Red's Meadow Road offers a general store and a café plus the trailhead for Rainbow Falls. The group area is set up for multi-day outdoor activity rather than front-country comforts; the main campground offers first-come, first-served individual sites nearby, and campers should be aware of the reservation policy: once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager can modify your reservation.
