“It was beautiful and we were able to do a senior photoshoot near our campsite. ”

Jessica R 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“What a nice, quiet and clean little camp area. No cell service was the best part. Great trails nearby, beautiful little creek and swimming hole. Highly recommend. ”

Jason B 5 · Sep 2025 · Recreation.gov

“very quite and nice camp grounds, not super private but far enough away so you cant overhear others. roads are maintained other than a few potholes. defiantly going again.”

About

Cottonwood Creek Campground sits directly on Highway 89 about four miles south of Sierraville and roughly a 20-mile drive from Truckee, making it an easy roadside base for exploring the northern reaches of Tahoe National Forest. The facility contains exactly 48 campsites, and each site is designated for both RVs and tents and comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring; vault toilets, potable water and trash collection are available within the loop. Sites are set among stands of Jeffrey pine and red and white fir along the creek, which gives campsites shade and a sense of separation from neighbors, though traffic noise from Highway 89 is audible in parts of the campground. The forest manages the site, so check Tahoe National Forest resources for the most current information on fees, reservation windows, seasonal openings and any road or weather advisories before you travel. Recreation spills right out of the campground: two short footpaths the Cottonwood Creek Botanical Trail and the Overlook Trail begin inside the loop and are good for quick walks to stretch legs or to scope wildlife along the creek. Beyond the campground you'll find plenty of day-trip options: Lake Tahoe's shoreline and boat launches are about a 40-minute drive for boating, kayaking or swimming; Sardine Lakes in the Lakes Basin sits roughly 35 minutes northwest via the Golden Chain/Highway 49; and Stampede Reservoir is roughly 45 minutes southeast. The broader Tahoe National Forest supports a wide range of activities, including auto touring and scenic drives, biking, boating, fishing, hiking, horse camping and horseback riding, hunting, off-highway vehicle use, picnicking and wildlife viewing, so Cottonwood Creek works well as a simple, well-located staging area for both short outings and longer explorations.
