Yuba Pass Campground sits atop Yuba Pass on Highway 49 in the North Yuba River country, surrounded by a stand of old-growth red fir that shades the sites and shelters a lively mix of wildlife. Birders will find a long species list here from hermit warblers and sapsuckers to osprey, bald eagles and sandhill cranes and quiet mornings often reward attentive visitors. The campground is a handy base for exploring the Lakes Basin and the Pacific Crest Trail access points a short drive away, and anglers can reach Gold Lakes Basin and Sardine Lakes (about nine miles west) for boating, swimming and trout fishing many lakes and streams in the basin produce rainbow and brook trout. Highway 49 itself is part of the Yuba-Donner Scenic Byway and carries a string of Gold Rush era sites and interpretive stops; the historic towns of Sierra City and Sierraville, with restaurants, shops and visitor information, are the nearest hubs for supplies and local history. Elsewhere in Tahoe National Forest you can expand into auto touring, mountain biking, horseback riding, OHV routes and hunting, so Yuba Pass works well for campers who want a mix of trail time, water recreation and regional exploration. The campground is operated by Tahoe National Forest and contains 20 single-family campsites all 20 are listed as both RV sites and tent sites each with a picnic table and a metal campfire ring. There are vault toilets and potable drinking water on site; no other hookups or facilities are listed. For access, think of Yuba Pass as roughly 11 miles west of Sierraville along Highway 49 (the Yuba-Donner Scenic Byway), with the campground entrance just off the road near the snow park turnout. Reservations and fees follow the forest's stated policies: there is no change fee when you extend or shorten a reservation if the new dates are within the original reservation, and switching to a campsite of equal price on the same dates carries no fee, but price differences are charged or refunded as appropriate. Be aware of the no-show rules where recorded: a $20 no-show fee is assessed and the first night's fee is forfeited if you fail to arrive and do not cancel by the posted deadline; early departures may forfeit some or all recreation fees. If you expect to arrive late, contact the facility they can't refund fees for a no-show, but they may prevent the no-show charge if they know you are en route.
