Patricia H ★ 5 · Sep 2023I gave it 5 stars because I love the area. The campground is a deplorable mess due to the forest service coming in and cutting down diseased trees and there were many. Good luck finding a level site for your tent anywhere in the campground as there is tree debris and ruts from tree removal machinery. Understand that the campground didn't open until July and has been closed the last 2 years, but they need to get in there and level out some tent sites!
GWYNN W ★ 2 · Aug 20232023. After a 3.5 year closure, it is open. Be aware that all the site photos are now inaccurate. The USFS hazard tree removal has devastated the campground. Not only is much of the site privacy gone, but the USFS did not clean up the mess. A few sites have been raked around the tables, that is all. Many of the sites have nowhere to put tents now, there is wood everywhere, slash piles, uneven ground, and parking spaces, broken picnic tables, and bear boxes, and some sites lack fire pits. What a bargain that we get to pay for this! Site 11 is the worst with a GIANT slash pile (fire danger?). Site 9 has a huge tree that was felled right into the creek, blocking access to what was once a pristine spot. Negligence and lack of care by the USFS. Heartbreaking, as it was such a special campground. NOT HAPPY!
Jen A ★ 1 · Aug 2023After waiting three years to come back, I was dissapointed to find that my favorite camping spot was used as a staging area to remove most of the trees. There were a lot of broken branches in and around the site. I felt it was a hazard to park my travel trailer and dangerous walking around. The table was way out of level. I came back this weekend (stayed at another space) to find my complaint was heard as it has been cleaned up and the table is closer to level. The picture posted is an old one. The campsite does not look close to this anymore.

Chapman Creek Campground sits along Highway 49 south of Sierraville, immediately adjacent to Chapman Creek and close to the North Yuba River. The site is divided into two loops one set of sites looks down onto the creek, the other backs onto a small meadow under a canopy of mature fir and lodgepole pine that provides shade for most campsites. The campground contains 21 single-family campsites in all: 15 sites are configured for both RVs and tents, and 6 are tent-only sites. Each campsite includes a picnic table, a food-storage locker (useful for securing food from wildlife), and a campfire ring; vault toilets and drinking water are provided on-site. The Pacific Crest Trail is in the vicinity and the two-mile Chapman Creek Trail begins inside the campground, making this a good base for day hikes or shorter outings without driving. Chapman Creek is managed by Tahoe National Forest, and the campground's location on Highway 49 makes it straightforward to reach by car. Outdoor opportunities around Chapman Creek are extensive: in-camp options include hiking, mountain biking on nearby trails, hunting and wildlife viewing, while boating, fishing and swimming are available roughly five miles away at Sardine Lakes where Sardine Lakes Resort rents boats and at the larger Lakes Basin area, which has more than 30 miles of maintained trails open to biking and horseback riding, plus boat ramps at Gold Lake. Anglers in the basin often target rainbow and brook trout. Practical policies to know before you go: reservations and fees are handled by Tahoe National Forest and changes that keep at least some original reservation dates typically do not incur a change fee; switching to a campsite with a different price will require payment of the difference or a refund. If you depart early you may forfeit some or all recreation fees. Where staffed, a documented no-show will trigger a $20 no-show fee and forfeiture of the first night's fee (or the full day-use fee for day-use facilities); if you expect to arrive late, contact the facility to avoid a no-show assessment. Check current opening dates, fees and reservation details with Tahoe National Forest before traveling.
