“Downieville trails. What else is there to say? Best single track moto and bike riding around. ”
“Uneven campsites. No cell service. Bears everywhere. Too close with PCT so there's lot of wandering hikers through the campground for water access! Restrooms: Smelly hole in the ground out house”

Packsaddle Campground sits in the Packer Lake area of Tahoe National Forest, framed by the Sierra Buttes and placed north of the Yuba River where trails and high-country lakes define the landscape. The facility is operated by the Forest Service and contains 16 campsites, each set up to accommodate both RVs and tents; two of those sites are configured for equestrian use and share a corral with extra room for stock trailers. Campsites come with a picnic table and a metal campfire ring, and the campground provides vault toilets and drinking water. The development is arranged in two loops: one more open but shaded by tall Jeffrey pine and fir, the other sitting up a forested hillside with some sites looking out over a wildflower-dotted meadow and others dropping toward a ravine with mountain peaks beyond. Outdoor options are immediate and varied. Packer Lake is under a mile to the west for canoeing, paddling, fishing and swimming, while Sardine Lakes and the greater Lakes Basin home to Gold Lake's larger boat ramp are a short drive away for wider boating and angling; anglers can expect rainbow and brook trout in many of the high country waters. A 2.9-mile Deer Lake Trail nearby is open to hikers, horseback riders and mountain bikers, and the Pacific Crest Trail can be reached from points in the basin, which also offers over 30 miles of maintained singletrack and hiking trails. Practical reservation details matter here: recorded no-shows at staffed facilities are assessed a $20 no-show fee and forfeit the first night's recreation fee (remote sites are often auto-checked-in), there is no change fee when extending or shortening a reservation that still includes original dates, and changing to a site with a different price will result in a charge or refund based on the difference. Access is most easily described as approximately 5 miles east of Sierra City on Highway 49 into the Gold Lake/Packer Lake area, with Packer Lake Road bringing you into the campground within a few miles.
