“The camp grounds are always wonderful, and a great experience. Jack is the campground supervisor and maintenance worker and he is one of the easiest guys to get along with. Super helpful, and great with our kids and pets. I give this campground a 5 star every year we go!”

YUBA RIVER RANGER STATION

Salmon Creek Campground sits along the banks of Salmon Creek in the North Yuba River area of the Tahoe National Forest, shaded by cottonwood, lodgepole pine and cedar. The site offers 29 campsites in total: 24 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 5 tent-only sites, each equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided on site, and the layout is informal and wooded rather than tightly spaced, so you'll feel tucked into a mountain-stream setting while remaining close to the road. The campground is managed by the Tahoe National Forest and is reached from Highway 49 about 18 miles south of Sierraville toward Bassetts, or roughly five miles north of Sierra City with a short drive west on the Gold Lake Highway; Salmon Creek sits just past Packer Lake Road on the left. Beyond the campsite, the Lakes Basin and surrounding high-country lakes offer much of the recreational draw: a large network of trails (including Tamarack Lake, Deer Lake and access points to the Pacific Crest Trail) plus more than 30 miles of maintained routes for hiking, mountain biking and singletrack riding. Sardine Lakes, roughly a mile west, provides fishing, swimming and boat rentals through Sardine Lakes Resort, and a more developed ramp at Gold Lake accommodates larger boats; anglers can expect rainbow and brook trout across the basin's lakes and streams. Activities in the broader Tahoe National Forest include auto touring, boating, fishing, horseback riding and camping, hunting, OHV use, picnicking, swimming and wildlife viewing. Practical details: reservation and cancellation rules are set by the managing agency changes that keep some or all of the original reservation dates generally carry no change fee, and switching to a campsite with the same price usually has no fee, but differences in price are charged or refunded accordingly. Where a facility records no-shows, a $20 no-show fee is assessed and the first night's recreation fee is forfeited; if you're delayed en route it's recommended you contact the campground to avoid a no-show penalty and to confirm seasonal availability and access conditions.
