Diablo Campground sits beside Packer Creek in the Packer Lake area north of the Yuba River and under the shadow of the Sierra Buttes, offering a compact, pine-dotted basecamp for exploring the Lakes Basin. The site is managed by Tahoe National Forest and contains 19 campsites arranged on two loops: 12 sites are set up to accommodate both RVs and tents, and 7 are tent-only. Each campsite includes a picnic table and a metal campfire ring, and vault toilets are available in the campground; there are no hookups or developed water or shower facilities listed, so come prepared to pack in water and supplies. Access is by Forest Road 93 off Highway 49, roughly 18 miles south of Sierraville and a short drive east toward Packer Lake, making it a relatively easy stop for motorists exploring this part of the northern Sierra Nevada. Outdoor opportunities around Diablo are plentiful and varied. A trail network in the area includes nearby access to the Pacific Crest Trail at the Packsaddle trailhead, and local trails lead to alpine lakes that are regularly fished for rainbow and brook trout; Packer Lake itself offers canoeing and quiet water play. The broader Lakes Basin offers more than 30 miles of maintained trails open to hiking, biking and horseback riding, and a boat ramp is available at Gold Lake for larger-water boating. Hunting, wildlife viewing, swimming and off-highway vehicle routes are among other activities available within Tahoe National Forest. Practical notes on reservations and fees: the forest follows a no-show policy at staffed facilities where recorded no-shows may be charged a $20 fee and forfeit the first night's recreation fee and remote sites are often automatically checked in on arrival date; there is no change fee when adjusting reservation dates within the original range, and campsite swaps at the same price are permitted, with price differences reconciled as needed. If you're delayed, contact the facility while en route to avoid a no-show penalty.
