What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (17 reviews, ★ 4.0). Not written or edited by us.

“Plenty of room for our group. Site was clean when we arrived. We're planning to rent again. ”

Ronald W 4 · Sep 2025 · Recreation.gov

“We LOVE camping at Stampede Reservoir! The group sites are large enough to accommodate our family, with plenty of room to spread out. Lots of picnic tables, a built in fire pit and bathrooms close by. It's perfect for us!”

About

Emigrant Group sits on the south shore of Stampede Reservoir where the Little Truckee River widens into a long, boat-friendly lake framed by stands of ponderosa and Jeffrey pine and fir. The reservoir is the campground's main draw: anglers come for rainbow and brown trout and kokanee salmon, and the water is used for boating, water skiing and swimming; a public boat ramp sits about a half-mile away. On land, a web of hiking, mountain-biking and off-highway vehicle trails threads through the surrounding forest, and the nearby Overland Emigrant Commemorative Trail is open to hikers and bikers. The broader Tahoe National Forest offers a wide range of recreational options from horseback riding and horse camping to hunting, auto touring and wildlife viewing and additional water access is available a short drive south at Boca Reservoir. The site is set up specifically for groups: there are four group campsites in total, and all four are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents. Two larger sites, Woodsman and Prospector, each list capacity for up to 50 people, while Rancher and Trapper each accommodate up to 25. Each group site centers on a shared cooking and picnic area with a large campfire ring, roughly six picnic tables and about four grills; horseshoe pits are installed at the Woodsman site. Emigrant Group is operated and maintained by Tahoe National Forest, and approaches are most commonly made from Truckee via I-80 to Hirschdale/Stampede Dam Road or via Highway 89 and Hobart Mills/Dog Valley Road drive times and routes vary. For current fees, reservation policies, seasonal availability and on-site service details (water, toilets, vehicle restrictions), check the Tahoe National Forest office or recreation.gov before you go; Truckee and the Lake Tahoe corridor provide the nearest full services and lodging if you need supplies or amenities.
