Mammoth Pool Campground is a low-key, primitive site tucked into Ponderosa pine and cedar along the San Joaquin River, about a half mile from the recreation area at Mammoth Pool Reservoir. It has 45 campsites, all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, each with a picnic table, metal grill and a campfire ring; vault toilets are on site but there is no drinking water, so bring your own. Note that the campground will be closed for the entire 2020 2025 camping seasons for a large-scale hazard tree removal project, so plan accordingly and check current status before you go. Access follows a forest route northeast from Fresno through North Fork and up Minarets Road, with a final four-mile turn onto Mammoth Pool Road into the reservoir basin. The reservoir and surrounding National Forest set the pace here: Mammoth Pool Reservoir supports fishing, boating and wildlife viewing and has a boat ramp a short walk from the campground, while the French Trail (12.7 miles) gives foot access into the Ansel Adams Wilderness and its high-country lakes and peaks. The broader Sierra National Forest also offers hiking routes and the opportunity to book stays in historic fire lookouts or cabins farther afield. Practical services are limited at the campground itself, but nearby Wagner's Mammoth Pool Resort provides a pay phone, gas and basic camping supplies. Because facilities are primitive and seasonal closures or fees can change, check the Sierra National Forest or recreation.gov pages for up-to-date reservation policies, fees and reopening information before you travel.
