Deer Creek Campground sits along the shore of Huntington Lake on the western slope of the central Sierra Nevada, roughly a short drive east of Shaver Lake on Highway 168 and about 1.2 miles around the lake from the Lakeshore community. The site is arranged in two distinct loops: one threaded through heavier stands of fir and pine with many sites right along the water, and the other offering more open, sunny sites closer to the resort area. All 28 campsites offer views of Huntington Lake and are built with paved parking spurs to accommodate both RVs and tents; each site also includes a picnic table, fire ring and grill. A few sites allow you to moor a boat nearby, which is convenient for early-morning fishing or joining the annual sailboat regatta. On-site amenities include drinking water, flush toilets (including accessible units) and a pay phone, and the Billy Creek Guard Station Museum sits adjacent to the campground if you want a quick local history stop. For facility-specific questions call (559) 893-2308. Recreation in this part of Sierra National Forest ranges from easy shoreline activities to multi-day trail travel: Huntington Lake supports swimming, sailing, both motorized and non-motorized boating, fishing and water skiing, and the broader area has numerous hikes Rancheria Falls, Indian Pools and Black Point among them and access for hikers and horseback riders to the 12-mile Kaiser Loop Trail that links into the Kaiser Wilderness trail network. The forest also offers hiking across varied terrain and opportunities to reserve overnight stays in historic fire lookouts or cabins through separate permits. Deer Creek is part of the Recreation.gov reservation system; you can generally book individual sites up to six months in advance (group sites up to 12 months), and changes or cancellations incur a $10 service fee. Late cancellations (the day before or on your arrival day) typically result in that $10 fee plus forfeiture of the first night's use fee, no-shows can carry additional penalties (including a possible $20 service fee), and refund requests must be made within 14 days after your scheduled departure. To reserve or change a booking use Recreation.gov or call 1-877-444-6777; transactions will appear on statements as "Recreation.gov 877-444-6777."
