Important safety notice first: Kinnikinnick Campground is currently closed until further notice because of hazard trees; do not plan to arrive expecting open sites. The loop of 25 campsites that normally lines the forest edge across the road from Huntington Lake each with a paved parking spur, picnic table, campfire ring and grill is unavailable while the Forest Service addresses the danger. When open, every site can accommodate both tents and RVs, and the campground provides drinking water, accessible flush toilets and a pay phone; the site sits under a dense canopy of fir and pine on the western slope of the central Sierra Nevada, immediately adjacent to Catavee Campground and about 1.3 miles around the lakeshore road from Huntington Lake's developed area. For up-to-the-minute facility information and the status of the closure, call the number listed for the site: (909) 638-6117. If you're plotting future trips, Kinnikinnick is positioned for both water- and trail-based days: Huntington Lake offers swimming, sailing, boating, canoeing and kayaking, plus fishing and water-skiing, while hikers and equestrians can reach local routes such as Rancheria Falls, Indian Pools and Black Point and access the 12-mile Kaiser Loop Trail that links into the Kaiser Wilderness. The broader Sierra National Forest also lists hiking and overnight fire lookouts/cabins among its recreation options. Reservations for sites in this area are handled through Recreation.gov individual sites are generally bookable six months in advance (group sites up to 12 months) and standard change/cancellation rules apply (a $10 service fee for changes or cancellations, late-cancel penalties that may include forfeiture of the first night's fee, and no-show fees); you can manage bookings online or by calling Recreation.gov at 1-877-444-6777. In the event of an emergency closure the reservation system will attempt to notify users and refunds are possible; be sure to review the individual facility page for any exceptions before you travel.
