“Loved this campsite and its kinda in the middle of the park so it made it nice and easy to get to where you want to go. ”
“Was a really nice site. My only negative was that the parking spot wasn’t as level as it could have been so I needed to put one tire on a large rock to level my camper. I was last minute and it was the only site available for 2 nights. ”

Perched at about 6,700 feet on the park's main road, Summit Lake South Campground sits a short walk from the small, clear Summit Lake and provides direct access to some of Lassen Volcanic's most-used trails. The loop accommodates 45 sites in total: 13 sites that accept both RVs and tents and 32 tent-only sites, with one loop specifically set aside for more secluded tent camping. Basic amenities include drinking water, vault toilets (there are no flush toilets), metal campfire rings and picnic tables; an on-site amphitheater hosts ranger-led educational programs. The campground is opposite Summit Lake North and roughly eight miles from Lassen Peak, so it's a convenient base for anyone planning a summit day or a series of day hikes. The Summit Lake area is a hub for hiking and backpacking one of the park's major trails lies only a quarter-mile from the campground, and the Cluster Lakes loop trail and Summit Lake Ranger Station are a short walk away; birders and packrafters use that route to access several alpine lakes. Summit Lake itself offers water-based recreation within easy reach of your campsite fishing, paddling and swimming are all common in season and the campground is the closest developed site to the Lassen Peak Trail and is within about 10 miles of the hydrothermal Bumpass Hell area. For up-to-date information on fees, reservations, seasonal openings and any vehicle or trail access requirements, consult the National Park Service campground page for Lassen Volcanic.
