“Campground is well maintained and bathrooms were very clean. Sites are unevenly spaced - this one was really close to A18, but a good distance from A16.”

At 6,700 feet on the park's main road, Summit Lake North Campground sits within easy walking distance of the small, scenic Summit Lake and directly across the water from Summit Lake South. The 42-site loop is split into 33 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and nine tent-only sites, so the road layout and spacing work for families, tent campers and small to medium RVs looking to be close to trailheads. Hikers find one of the park's major routes only a quarter-mile from camp; the Cluster Lakes loop trail and the Summit Lake Ranger Station are nearby, and the campground is the closest developed site to the Lassen Peak Trail (Lassen Peak itself rises to 10,457 feet about eight miles away). Other marquee destinations such as the hydrothermal basin Bumpass Hell lie within roughly 10 miles, making Summit Lake North a practical base for day hikes into the park's volcanic landscape and for early starts to avoid afternoon crowds on the more popular trails. Facilities are straightforward and park-focused: flush toilets, potable drinking water, campfire rings and picnic tables are provided, and an amphitheater on site hosts ranger-led educational programs. From camp you can step into the wider range of park activities hiking, wildlife viewing, fishing, auto touring, biking, paddling and boating among them while backpackers can use nearby trailheads to reach alpine lakes and interior routes. Because the campground sits at high elevation, expect cooler nights and thinner air; for current fees, reservation rules, seasonal openings and any vehicle or size restrictions consult the National Park Service page for Campgrounds of Lassen Volcanic (http://www.nps.gov/lavo/planyourvisit/camping_in_campgrounds.htm) before you go.
