“Overcrowded. Incredibly loud. One bathroom. ”
“The bathrooms were closed for some reason, and I wasn’t notified ahead of time that they would be, which caused an inconvenience. The ranger checking the camp was rude.”
“Cinder cone trail takes off from right here. Which is grueling but incredibly rewarding. The campground is super quiet. I went early Oct and it was definitely mega cold at night. Probably close to freezing so just be prepared for that! ”

Butte Lake Campground sits at about 6,100 feet in the northeastern corner of Lassen Volcanic National Park and feels more remote than the park's other campgrounds. The site is set among Ponderosa pines on soft volcanic soils, with several small ponds nearby and Butte Lake itself within easy walking distance; a broad black lava flow continues into the lake and creates rocky shores that are especially interesting from a kayak or canoe. The campground contains 78 sites in total, arranged in two equal loops Loop A and Loop B each have 39 sites with 76 sites configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and two designated tent-only sites. Expect a roughly six-mile stretch of rough gravel road to reach the facility from the main access; the campground is about a 45-minute drive from the park's main road, so plan for a slower pace when packing and arriving. Recreation here leans toward water and volcanic features: Butte Lake's non-motorized boat launch makes it convenient to paddle, fish for trout, or swim, and several trailheads are close by the Cinder Cone Trail begins within the campground and leads up a volcanic dome, while Painted Dunes, Snag Lake and Bathtub Lake are all within easy reach for day hikes or backpacking. Amenities are basic but serviceable: flush toilets and running water are turned on in summer, and vault toilets are available outside the peak season. Because specific fees and reservation rules can change, check the park's official campground page before you go for up-to-date information; note also that nearby attractions such as Subway Cave in Lassen National Forest run seasonal tours (weekend tours in summer), so timing your visit can broaden what's open and accessible.
