Fairview Campground sits at about 3,500 feet along the Upper Kern River amid stands of gray pine and scrub oak, where cottonwoods and willows line the river's edge and canyon walls roll up from the water. The site is arranged in three paved loops Loop A (15 sites), Loop B (20 sites) and Loop C (19 sites) for a total of 54 campsites. Of those, 35 are designated RV sites, 13 are tent-only, and 6 sites are set up to accommodate either RVs or tents. Picnic areas, vault toilets and drinking water are provided, and some sites offer river views or direct riverside access; there is also a restaurant adjacent to the campground. The facility is operated by Rocky Mountain Recreation Company (RMRC), comment forms are available from campground hosts or RMRC, and for facility-specific information campers can call (760) 376-1269. Fairview is about 13 miles north of Kernville and is generally reached from Bakersfield by taking Highway 178 east to Lake Isabella, then Highway 155 to Kernville and north on Sierra Way/Mountain 99. The Upper Kern is a designated Wild and Scenic River, and whitewater rafting and kayaking are among the most popular draws here; if you plan a river trip, check the National Forest Service overview for safety, permitting requirements and local outfitter listings. From the south end of the campground you can step onto several foot and mountain-bike trails, including the longer Whiskey Flat (13 miles) and Flynn Canyon (16 miles) routes as well as the 4-mile Tobies Trail, so hiking and biking are immediate options. Beyond the river and trails, Sequoia National Forest activities include fishing, horseback riding and horse camping, off-highway vehicle use, interpretive programs and overnight stays in historic fire lookout cabins where available these broader opportunities make the campground a practical base for day trips to Sequoia National Park, the Trail of 100 Giants and nearby sequoia groves; the Giant Sequoia Mercantile in the area stocks maps, supplies and local information. For current fees, reservations and seasonal openings, confirm with the Forest Service or RMRC before you go.
