“very nice campgrond and host. Nice sites. The only issue was the terrible state of the toilets. Please invest a bit at least in new toilet seats and maybe a cleaning out of the tank more often?”

Hospital Flat Campground sits at about 3,000 feet along the Kern Wild and Scenic River, roughly 6.5 miles north of Kernville on Sierra Way (Mountain 99). The campground is a single loop of mostly single-family sites placed close to the riverbank where cottonwoods and willows line the water and gray pine, scrub oak and native grasses cling to the steep canyon walls above. There are 36 campsites in all: 32 sites are designated to accommodate both RVs and tents, and 4 are tent-only sites. Each site provides a picnic table and campfire ring; vault toilets and a drinking water source are available in the campground. The site descriptions do not list electrical or sewer hookups, so plan on basic, non-hookup camping unless you confirm otherwise with the Forest Service. River recreation defines the immediate area hiking, fishing, and river sports such as kayaking and rafting are popular on this stretch of the Upper Kern. The Cannell Meadow National Recreation Trail begins just north of Kernville for longer dayhikes and backpacking (an 11.5-mile climb through mixed pine and fir to Cannell Meadow and a historic cabin), and visitors often use Hospital Flat as a base for day trips into Sequoia National Park and the Giant Sequoia National Monument. Beyond the campground's river-focused activities, Sequoia National Forest offers a wider range of opportunities including biking, horse camping and horseback riding, interpretive programs, overnight use of fire lookouts or cabins, fishing, and off-highway vehicle routes.
