Live Oak Campground sits among a stand of mature oak trees at about 2,500 feet, directly across the road from Lake Isabella on the southern edge of the Sierra Nevada foothills. The site inventory here is unusual: there is a single campsite a group site configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and able to hold up to 150 people and a combined total of 30 vehicles or RVs. Facilities on site include flush toilets, showers and drinking water, and the unit is operated by Sequoia Recreation (California Land Management); reservations are not accepted, so camping is on a first-come, first-served basis. For facility-specific questions call (760) 376-1269, and hosts on site can provide comment forms and local guidance. Because the campground faces Lake Isabella, water recreation is the immediate draw swimming, water skiing, windsurfing and fishing are all popular from the nearby shore. The lake fishes well for trout in colder months and also holds crappie, bluegill, catfish and largemouth bass, while the surrounding Sequoia National Forest offers a broader menu of outdoor pursuits: hiking, biking, horseback riding and horse camping, off-highway vehicle routes, interpretive programs, and overnight stays in fire lookouts or cabins in other parts of the forest. Live Oak is a practical base for day trips to the Trail of a Hundred Giants and other sequoia groves within Giant Sequoia National Monument and Sequoia National Park; the small town of Kernville and the Giant Sequoia Mercantile with maps and supplies is about five miles away.
