About

Pioneer Point sits on the high-desert edge of Lake Isabella in Sequoia National Forest, east of Bakersfield along Highway 178 and just north of the town of Lake Isabella on Highway 155. The campground has 75 sites in total; each of those 75 sites is set up to accommodate both RVs and tents, so you'll find level pads and spaces suitable for trailers alongside traditional tent spots. Reservations are not being accepted, and the campground is open year-round, so plan on first-come, first-served arrival during busy weekends. The development is operated by Rocky Mountain Recreation Company (a division of ExplorUS), campground hosts are on site, and comment forms are available from them or online; for facility-specific questions call (760) 376-1269. Several sites look out over the reservoir, a playground provides a place for kids to burn off energy, and lake access is less than a mile the town of Lake Isabella is only about a 2-mile drive for groceries, fuel and local services. Recreation at Pioneer Point revolves around Lake Isabella, one of California's largest reservoirs and the point where the Upper and Lower Kern Rivers divide. The lake is open for swimming, water skiing and windsurfing, and in colder months it's known for trout fishing as well as populations of black and white crappie, bluegill, catfish and largemouth bass. Beyond the shoreline, the broader Sequoia National Forest offers a wide range of activities hiking and biking on forest trails, horse camping and horseback riding routes, interpretive programs, off-highway vehicle opportunities, and even overnight stays in fire lookouts or cabins in some parts of the forest. Pioneer Point also makes a convenient base for day trips to sequoia groves and the Trail of a Hundred Giants in the Giant Sequoia National Monument; note that this location does not provide direct day-use access into Sequoia National Park. The forest itself spans about 1.1 million acres with elevations from roughly 1,000 to 12,000 feet, so the landscape shifts quickly as you head up from the reservoir into canyoned country with streams and waterfalls.
