“Great campground. It’s only you and the nature.”
“Bring fishing rods. Kern river is a walking distance to any site at this campground. The most peaceful campground I have ever stayed at. People were so respectful of quiet hours. Camp host was super friendly. ”

Sandy Flat Campground sits at about 2,300 feet on the lower slopes near Lake Isabella, set back a short walk from the Lower Kern River where gravel bars and slow runs invite wading, floating and trout fishing. The campground's 27 sites are arranged on a single loop in mostly open spaces 24 sites are suitable for either RVs or tents while three are tent-only and the loop is dotted with large ice-age boulders that give the area a distinctive, rocky character. River access is through the day camp area, and basic amenities at the campground include drinking water, picnic areas and vault toilets; there are no described hookups, so plan accordingly. The footprint is compact and easy to navigate, and campground hosts distribute comment forms (and the site is operated by Rocky Mountain Recreation Company, a division of ExplorUS), so if you have questions about fees, reservations or seasonal availability call the facility at (760) 376-1269 or check the Forest's visitor information online. Recreation centers on the river and the nearby Hobo Fishing Trail a short walking route favored for quick outings with popular on-site pursuits including trout fishing, river wading and floating; longer hikes, biking, horseback riding and other backcountry activities are accessible in the surrounding Sequoia National Forest. The forest itself spans a wide elevation range and offers a range of experiences from sequoia groves and waterfall canyons to horse camping, interpretive programs and even overnight fire lookout/cabin stays in different areas. Before you go, review the Lower Kern River safety and permitting guidance on the Forest's website and consider local outfitters for float trips; for quick access from the valley, Sandy Flat is reached just east of Lake Isabella off Highway 178 via Borel Road and Old Canyon Road.
