“Nice campground, great camp site (right on the river). You should know that it is really hot there for months. And there's no fires allowed for months.”
“Pretty place. The trees need to be trimmed. Even on the main/only road through the campground they scratches my van. ”
“Beautiful campsite, relatively easy access to the river and not too far from town for any forgotten supplies. Great spot for kids and older adults to camp.”

Headquarters Campground sits at about 2,800 feet on a broad bend of the Kern Wild and Scenic River, roughly six miles north of Kernville in the Upper Kern River corridor. The site mix is deliberate: there are 42 campsites in all 25 intended for RVs, 13 tent-only sites, 2 sites set up to accommodate both RVs and tents, and 2 glamping sites for a roomier, more outfitted stay. Some sites sit right above the river and drop into shade under oak, juniper and cottonwood; others are more exposed and offer wide sunlit clearings. Basic on-site amenities are straightforward and functional: each site includes a picnic table and campfire ring, and the campground provides vault toilets and drinking water. There is a mix of standard, RV and tent-only sites, but hookups or other utility details are not listed, so plan for primarily self-contained camping for RVs. The campground places you within immediate reach of what the Upper Kern River is best known for hiking, fishing, kayaking and rafting are popular activities in the area, and local outfitters and permitting requirements are listed on the Sequoia National Forest Upper Kern River visitor pages. Beyond river recreation, the forest offers a long menu of activities (biking, horse camping and horseback riding, interpretive programs, fishing, hiking, and opportunities to visit historic cabins and fire lookouts), and the Cannell Meadow National Recreation Trail begins just north of Kernville, climbing about 11.5 miles through mixed pine and fir to a meadow and a historic Forest Service cabin. Headquarters is also a sensible base for day trips into Sequoia National Park and the Giant Sequoia National Monument. For facility-specific details, current reservation or permit rules, or questions about seasonal access, call the forest office at (760) 376-1269 or consult the Sequoia National Forest visitor pages.
