“Relaxing peaceful stay at Onion Valley Campground. Well maintained camp site and toilet facilities. ”
“Great campground for a high sierra feel with car camping convenience. Solid hikes are available to nearby lakes and Kearsarge Pass. ”
“Campsite # 2 is probably the best site as it is secluded and gives a feeling of camping in the back country. Very clean facilities, bathrooms which campers maintain with respect to other campers and hikers. The views are breathtaking! ”

Perched at about 9,200 feet in the eastern Sierra, Onion Valley Campground sits near the end of Onion Valley Road against a backdrop of jagged peaks, lodgepole pine and aspen stands. The loop of 29 campsites is compact and intentionally low-impact: 17 sites are for tents only and 12 are designated for both RVs and tents, but all are primitive and private with a view of nearby creek and lake. Wildflowers color the basin in late spring and early summer, and wildlife is a regular presence black bears, mule deer, pikas and a variety of birds are known to frequent the area, so campers are required to store food in the provided bear-proof lockers. The campground is about 13 miles west of Independence, California, via Onion Valley Road, and every site looks out onto the rugged terrain that defines this stretch of the John Muir Wilderness. What draws people here is the immediate access to high-country trails and fishing: trailheads for Kearsarge Pass, Robinson Lake and the Golden Trout Lakes are all within easy reach for day hikes or multi-day trips into the John Muir Wilderness and over into Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Anglers can try for rainbow, brown, brook and Alpers trout in Robinson Lake and the nearby creek. Facilities are basic but thoughtful for a backcountry setting vault toilets, bear-proof food lockers (mandatory), and firewood sold on site but there are no developed hookups listed, so plan for primitive camping. Information on current fees, reservation windows and seasonal access isn't included here; check with the Inyo National Forest office before you go to confirm openings, road conditions and any permits you might need.
