Grays Meadows sits along Independence Creek in the Onion Valley area of the eastern Sierra Nevada at about 6,100 feet, where a wandering creek threads through a large oak grove and a high-desert landscape. To the west the terrain rises toward Mt. Williamson and Mt. Whitney, and trails leading into the John Muir Wilderness are within easy reach most notably the Shepherd Pass Trail, accessed just west of the campground, which climbs steeply into alpine lakes and high peaks. The creek is regularly stocked with trophy-size rainbow trout and opens early in the season (trout fishing begins the first weekend in March), so anglers often arrive before much of the region is fully awake; hikers, horseback riders, and spring skiers and snowboarders also use Grays Meadows as a base for exploring the rugged surrounding country. The campground itself is divided into upper and lower sections and offers a modest but practical set of services for backcountry access and family camping. There are 31 total campsites, and all 31 are configured for both RVs and tents, sited mostly in shaded oak stands with the creek bordering one side of the loop; a handful of sites sit closest to the water. Because the area supports abundant wildlife, including black bear, food must be stored in the on-site bear-proof lockers, and firewood is available for purchase. A campground manager is located at site 7. Opening and closing dates can depend on snow and weather, so plan ahead and check current conditions before you go; Grays Meadows is reached by heading west from Independence on Onion Valley Road about six miles from US-395.
