“Gorgeous site tucked in a grove of tall pine trees and surrounded by large boulders. Incredibly peaceful listening to the wind through the trees and the nearby stream.”
“These are the campgrounds that the legends are made from.”

Whitney Portal Campground sits at about 8,000 feet in the eastern Sierra Nevada at the base of Mt. Whitney, with paved road access about 13 miles west of Lone Pine on Whitney Portal Road off U.S. 395. Campsites line both sides of Whitney Creek and are laid out among tall pines and rugged granite ridgelines; wildlife is common here black bear activity is frequent, and visitors may also see mule deer, pika, pine marten, and a variety of birds. The campground functions as a practical base for hikers and anglers: trailheads to Mt. Whitney, Meysan Lake and routes into the John Muir Wilderness are roughly a half-mile from the site, and there are numerous nearby lakes, streams and a small pond stocked with trout. If you plan to hike into the John Muir Wilderness or attempt the Mt. Whitney approach, be aware that many routes require permits (Mt. Whitney entry is managed by a lottery during peak season), so arrange permits well in advance. The campground offers 46 sites in all 26 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 20 tent-only sites plus three designated group camping areas. Facilities include paved roads within the campground, vault toilets and drinking water; firewood is available for purchase on site, and a small convenience store with showers is a short drive away. Because of the high level of bear activity, the campground requires use of the provided bear-proof food storage lockers (dimensions: 18 inches high by 18 inches deep by 50 inches long), so plan meals and packing to fit those limits. Seasonal access, fees and reservation rules can change, so check the Inyo National Forest website or local ranger office for current conditions, road status and reservation information before you go.
