Gates Group Campground sits along the North Fork American River at the north end of French Meadows Reservoir, about 40 miles from Foresthill and surrounded by a conifer forest at roughly 5,200 feet. The campground consists of three group campsites (total campsites: 3), and all three are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents. Two of those group sites each hold up to 25 people and eight vehicles; the larger group site can hold up to 75 people and 25 vehicles. Basic amenities at each site include picnic tables, campfire rings with grills, vault toilets and potable drinking water, so you can expect simple, walk-in campground comforts rather than hookups or flush toilets. Road access is an important consideration: Mosquito Ridge Road outside Foresthill is closed, and as of June 2023 the recommended route for low-clearance vehicles, trucks pulling trailers, and RVs is through Georgetown on Eldorado National Forest via Wentworth Springs Road to Eleven Pines Road; high-clearance vehicles may approach via Foresthill Road to 43 Road (Robinson Flat Road) to Mosquito Ridge Road when snow conditions allow. Because trail and road conditions change seasonally, confirm current access before you go. The river and nearby reservoir are the focal points for recreation: the North Fork American River provides fishing and swimming, and two public boat ramps are located within three miles for boating, canoeing and launching to the reservoir. Trails in the surrounding forest give hikers and mountain bikers access to longer routes and backcountry terrain, with the Granite Chief Wilderness and its aspen stands and high passes reachable for those prepared for more remote hiking. The long Western States Trail runs through the area and is open to hikers, horseback riders, dirt bikers and experienced mountain bikers, and the broader Tahoe National Forest offers opportunities for auto touring, wildlife viewing, picnicking, hunting and off-highway vehicle use. Fees, reservation policies and seasonal availability are not specified here, so check with the Tahoe National Forest office or current trail and road reports before planning a visit.
