“The site was very beautiful and the lake was a great fun for kids. The night was very cold on July 4th weekend, make sure you bring warm clothes and bedding ”

Coyote Group Campground sits on the northeast end of French Meadows Reservoir beside the Middle Fork of the American River, in a coniferous forest at about 5,200 feet elevation. The facility is operated and maintained by Tahoe National Forest and is located in a remote stretch roughly 40 miles from Foresthill, so plan for a long drive and changing road conditions. The campground contains TOTAL CAMPSITES: 4 four group sites that accommodate both RVs and tents (SITE TYPE BREAKDOWN: 4 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites). The four group sites are named Black Bear (an accessible site that can hold up to 50 people) and Brush Wolf, Little Wolf and Prairie Wolf (each rated for up to 25 people). Scattered picnic tables, stone or metal campfire circles with grills, vault toilets and drinking water are provided across the campground; beyond those basic amenities, services are limited, so check the Tahoe National Forest website for current fees, reservation rules and seasonal openings before you go. Recreation centers on water and trails: the Middle Fork of the American River and French Meadows Reservoir offer fishing, swimming and boating, with two public boat ramps located within about three miles of the campground for launches or canoe trips. A network of hiking and biking routes threads the surrounding hills, and nearby trails provide access toward the Granite Chief Wilderness and sections of the Western States Trail the latter used for hiking, horseback riding, dirt biking and adventurous mountain biking. Because road access changes seasonally and some approaches are rough, low-clearance vehicles, trucks pulling trailers and motorhomes/RVs will generally reach the area most reliably from the Georgetown side through Eldorado National Forest (Wentworth Springs Rd to Eleven Pines Rd); high-clearance vehicles may be able to approach from Foresthill Rd to 43 Rd (Robinson Flat Rd) to Mosquito Ridge Rd when snow conditions allow, but Soda Springs/43 Rd approaches are not recommended for trailers or ordinary passenger cars. Plan accordingly for warm days and cool nights at this elevation, and confirm current road conditions and campground availability with the Forest Service before you head out.
