“It’s ok. Not bad. The coffee shop is a really nice touch”

French Meadows Campground sits on the south shore of French Meadows Reservoir within Tahoe National Forest, roughly 40 miles from the town of Foresthill. The site is set in a pine and fir stand where summer days can run warm and evenings cool, and it is operated and maintained by Tahoe National Forest. There are 68 campsites total, and each is configured to accommodate both tents and RVs; sites come with a picnic table, fire ring and a metal food locker, and a few sites are wheelchair accessible. Roads and parking spurs throughout the campground are paved; vault and flush toilets and drinking water are provided. Several campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis check the forest's current reservation and fee information before you go and seasonal road conditions (snow) can affect which highways and forest roads are passable. The reservoir is the main draw for water recreation: a boat ramp sits adjacent to the campground and the lake is popular for boating, canoeing, fishing and swimming, while the North Fork American River is nearby for additional fishing and swimming opportunities. Trails branching out from the area link to longer routes such as the Western States Trail and provide access toward the Granite Chief Wilderness, where hikers can find aspen groves and higher, more secluded passes; the Western States corridor also supports horseback riding, dirt biking and mountain biking. Beyond water and trail use, French Meadows is a good base for the broader range of Tahoe National Forest activities auto touring, biking, wildlife viewing and hunting in a setting that combines easy lake access with immediate entry to multi-use and wilderness trails.
