“Beautiful campground with lots of shade. Steep entry into space and my auto levelers had trouble. We were in space 6, but it’s a large space and we didn’t feel like we were right on top of our neighbors. ”
“Stayed at Frenchmans campground by the lake and we had a great time! It's Beautiful their! The site was clean and the Hosts were knowledgeable and funny!! Will definitely go camping at Frenchmans campground again.”

Frenchman Campground sits at about 5,700 feet on a pine-covered hillside along the southeastern peninsula of Frenchman Lake, a reservoir with roughly 21 miles of shoreline where the Sierra Nevada mountains begin to give way to high desert terrain. Sites look out over open water and forested ridges, and the placing of the campground puts you within easy reach of shoreline activities swimming, fishing, and a nearby boat launch and day-use area as well as lake sports such as waterskiing and jet skiing. On land, the campground is a convenient base for hiking, biking, picnicking and, in season, hunting; in winter the area supports ice fishing and snowmobiling when lake and road conditions allow. Wildlife is common in the surrounding Plumas National Forest, and the broader area includes attractions like Little Last Chance Canyon Scenic Area and the wide, grassy expanse of Sierra Valley. The campground contains 38 campsites that accommodate both RVs and tents; 12 of those sites can be reserved during peak season while the remaining sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each site comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill, and the campground provides vault toilets and drinking water. Frenchman remains officially open year-round, but the access road is often closed by winter snow, so plan accordingly; many forest roads in the area require a full tank of gas and a dependable vehicle, and carrying a map is strongly recommended. For facility-specific questions call (530) 836-2575. To reach the lake region from Reno, travel north on Highway 395, then west on Highway 70 toward Chilcoot and follow Highway 284 north into the Frenchman Lake area.
