Lightning Tree Campground sits at about 5,800 feet on the east side of Lake Davis and functions as a compact, family-oriented base for exploring the lake and surrounding rangelands. The developed loop contains 16 campsites that each accommodate both tents and RVs; a handful of sites are accessible. Campsites are a mix of first-come/first-served and reservable spots (reservations can be made up to six months in advance), and all site specifics, fees and current road or fire restrictions are best confirmed ahead of arrival by calling the Plumas National Forest office at (530) 836-2575. There are no on-site full hookups; coin-operated showers are available about 4 miles away at Grasshopper Flat Campground. The drive to Lightning Tree is straightforward from Portola roughly a 12-mile trip north along county roads on the east shore of Lake Davis and the campground is also reachable from Reno via Highways 395 and 70 through Portola. The campground is located within the larger Lake Davis Recreation Area, whose 32 miles of shoreline provide multiple boat launches and shore-access fishing spots. Anglers will commonly find rainbow and brown trout, bass and catfish; a public boat ramp is nearby for small boats and trailers. Away from the water, the landscape retains traces of its sheepherding and ranching past open rangeland and meadow pockets where cattle still graze and Smith Peak State Game Refuge to the south and west is a reliable place for birding, wildlife viewing and photography. Smith Peak Fire Lookout offers a wide view over Lake Davis, Sierra Valley and the peaks of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade ranges. In addition to fishing and boating you'll find trails and roads for mountain biking and hiking, plus hunting in season; winter brings ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Portola provides nearby services groceries, restaurants and the Western region's largest railroad museum and local points of interest include the restored Basque-style sheepherder oven at Jenkins Point and the Smith Peak lookout for panoramic hikes.
