“Camp host ‘patty’ was extraordinaire in her duties and presence! Loved that the fire trucks came through daily and the ranger kept track of coolers and food that needed to put up from bears. Campsites were clean and nice views of the lake.”
“Weather was nice Camp host on her game and friendly.”

Perched at 5,886 feet on the east side of Lake Davis, Grasshopper Flat Campground wraps around low hills so most of its 67 sites look out over the lake's clear blue water and the pine-forested slopes that provide afternoon shade. The campground is laid out on paved roads with paved pads at each site; every one of the 67 campsites is configured to serve both tents and RVs and can hold up to two vehicles. You'll find standard campsite amenities at each location a picnic table, a metal campfire ring and a grill plus a single large group site for bigger gatherings. Parking and circulation are straightforward thanks to the paved surfaces, and practical services such as a nearby RV dump station, a boat ramp, and (in peak season) a campground host, drinking water, coin-operated showers, flush toilets and trash collection make longer stays easier. Recreation at Grasshopper Flat centers on Lake Davis: the 4,000-acre reservoir created in 1967 offers 32 miles of shoreline with countless fishing access points, regular boating and swimming spots, and a trailhead for the 7-mile Lake Davis Trail less than half a mile from the campground. Anglers should note the area's popular trout fisheries and free trout fishing days held in June and September; in winter the lake draws ice fishers, snowmobilers and cross-country skiers, while spring through fall opens opportunities for mountain biking, hunting and wildlife viewing. The campground sits about a short drive north of Portola on county roads that lead to the lake's east side, with a state game refuge bordering portions of the shoreline and Portola's railroad museum within easy reach for a town visit. Because some services and seasonal availability vary, check current fees and reservation policies before you go by calling the facility at (530) 927-7878.
