Perched at about 5,777 feet on the eastern shore of 4,000-acre Lake Davis, Grizzly Campground is a compact, family-friendly option inside the Lake Davis Recreation Area where pines and scattered aspens frame a shoreline that stretches for 32 miles. The campground has 26 sites that can accommodate either tents or RVs, and only a few of those spots actually look out over the water; most sites sit among tall pines that provide good afternoon shade but limited understory privacy. The setting tends toward quieter lakeside recreation motorized water skiing and jet skiing are prohibited on Lake Davis so activities here lean toward fishing, boating from any of four launch points (a boat ramp is about a half-mile north of the campground), swimming at calmer spots, and exploring nearby forest roads. Anglers will find rainbow and brown trout along with bass and catfish, while Smith Peak State Game Refuge bordering the lake creates dependable opportunities for birdwatching, wildlife viewing, hunting in season, and late-season color from aspens. Grizzly's 26 sites are set up for straightforward, self-reliant camping: each site includes a picnic table, a campfire ring with grill, and space for up to two vehicles, but utility hookups are not provided. Two accessible campsites are available and the campground offers accessible flush toilets and drinking water; a campground host is on site and coin-operated showers can be used a half-mile away at Grasshopper Flat Campground. A large portion of sites are offered first-come, first-served, though not every site falls into that category contact the Forest Service for current reservation options, fees, seasonal openings, and road/vehicle requirements. The campground is roughly nine miles north of Portola and is reached from that town by following County Roads 126 and 112 to the east side of Lake Davis; for facility-specific information call (530) 836-2575 before you go.
