Lookout Campground sits on the California Nevada line just west of Reno at about 6,770 feet, tucked into a large aspen stand with intermixed pine and fir. Sites are roomy and well spaced, which gives a sense of privacy uncommon to many front-country campgrounds; the setting feels like a quiet high-sierra grove rather than a tight RV park. Crystal Peak rises nearby and can be reached by vehicle or a short walk from camp; the peak and surrounding public lands attract off-highway vehicle riders, mountain bikers and horseback riders, and the larger forest is used for hunting, wildlife viewing and winter sports. The American Discovery Trail passes through this area, so Lookout makes a convenient base for day hikes, bike rides and exploring Dog Valley and Peavine Mountain, both known for OHV terrain and varied singletrack. The campground has a TOTAL CAMPSITES: 17, all configured as Both RV Sites & Tent Sites and managed on a first-come, first-served basis (note there are two double sites among them). Each site includes a picnic table, tent pad, grill and a fire ring; the area is served by four vault toilets and routine trash service. There are no electric hookups and no dump station; trailers and RVs should generally be limited to 15 feet in length though two sites can accommodate units up to 30 feet. Non-potable water is available on site strictly for extinguishing campfires there is no drinking water so bring your own potable supply and your own firewood. Access involves about 7.2 miles on a dirt Forest Road (#002) off Bridge Street near Verdi; the dirt road often develops washboards and can be rough, and while a 2-wheel-drive vehicle can navigate it, low-clearance rigs are not recommended. Also be aware Bridge Street includes two one-lane bridges with a 13-foot height limit, which can affect taller rigs. The group picnic area is reservable and accommodates up to 100 people; for current fees, seasonal openings and any fire restrictions, check with the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest headquarters before you go.
