Coy Flat sits at about 5,000 feet inside the Giant Sequoia National Monument portion of Sequoia National Forest, just a short drive up from the tiny community of Camp Nelson and only a couple of miles from Pierpoint Springs Resort. The site is compact there are 18 campsites in total, and each is designated for both tent and RV use so it's better suited to small groups and travelers who prefer a quieter, more intimate camping experience than large, developed campgrounds offer. Practical details such as fees, seasonal openings, reservation rules and specific on-site amenities can change, so plan to call the forest office at (661) 455-6010 for up-to-date information before you go; road access approaches from Highway 190 east of Springville, with a short spur road off Nelson Drive that brings you directly to the campground area. Recreation around Coy Flat takes advantage of the Monument's big-tree landscape and higher country. Within easy reach are parts of the Belknap Grove and trails into sequoia groves, while the Bear Creek Trail climbs from the valley to about 9,000 feet through mixed forest and meadow, offering long day-hikes or multi-day options. Several small creeks in the area support trout fishing, and across Sequoia National Forest which ranges from roughly 1,000 to 12,000 feet in elevation and contains more than 30 sequoia groves visitors can also find biking, horseback riding and horse camping areas, interpretive programs, overnight fire lookouts or cabins, and off-highway vehicle opportunities; dramatic features like Salmon Creek Falls and Grizzly Falls are examples of the steeper terrain and mountain streams that define the region.
