Tule Campground sits on the northeastern shore of Success Lake at the southern edge of the Central Valley where the land rises into the Sierra Nevada foothills, offering open water views and sparse stands of trees rather than dense forest shade. The lake, when full, holds 82,500 acre-feet of water across about 2,450 surface acres (one acre-foot = 325,872 gallons), and the surrounding foothills put on a show of spring wildflowers. The campground contains 100 campsites in total; all 100 sites accommodate both RVs and tents, and several sites include electrical hookups for those who need power. Because shade is limited, expect sun-exposed sites and bring a shade tarp or canopy if that matters to your comfort. Access is off Highway 190 east of Porterville follow highway signage from State Route 99 to the Success Lake entrance and the campground gates are locked nightly from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Facilities at Tule are straightforward and built around lake recreation: there are flush toilets, showers, potable drinking water and a dump station, plus on-site boat ramps and playgrounds for families. The lake supports boating, kayaking (quiet, unpopulated coves are popular), swimming and a variety of fishing anglers commonly catch bass, crappie, catfish and bluegill, with trout showing up occasionally. The park lists additional activities such as environmental education, horseback riding, picnicking, specialized sports sites, water sports and wildlife viewing, and campfire programs are presented at the amphitheater on Saturdays from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Tule is open year-round; specific fees, reservation rules and other permit requirements aren't provided here, so check the park's official website or call the ranger station before you go and be prepared to follow posted rules and seasonal guidance.
