Oso Group Campground sits in the Barton Flats portion of the San Bernardino Mountains at roughly 6,400 feet, surrounded by a dense stand of pines and the wide, rocky valley of the Santa Ana drainage. This is a single large group site (the campground contains one campsite total) sized to handle both RVs and tents and to accommodate up to about 100 people and roughly 20 vehicles; roads and the parking area are gravel and dirt and there are no utility hookups. The site comes furnished for group use with multiple picnic tables, grills and a central campfire circle; flush toilets and potable drinking water are available, and tent pads offer more shade while the main group areas are relatively open. The Oso Group shares an entrance road with the neighboring Lobo Group Campground and is accessed from State Route 38 in the Barton Flats area about a 22-mile drive up SR-38 from Redlands making it convenient for visitors coming from the I-10 corridor. Recreation radiates directly from the campground: the Santa Ana River Trail (a long-distance route that will eventually reach the Pacific) is a popular corridor for hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders, and the Rio Monte Trail leads to the Rio Monte Panorama, which looks down into a deep Santa Ana River gorge. Jenks Lake is a short drive away for fishing and non-motorized boating rowboats, canoes and kayaks are allowed and the lake is regularly stocked with rainbow trout and also supports largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish and catfish; fishing is also possible on the nearby Santa Ana River. Educational evening programs at the Grayback Amphitheater on SR-38 often run on summer weekends and are hosted by the San Gorgonio Wilderness Association. Because this is a reservable group facility, plan ahead through Recreation.gov (group sites are available up to 12 months in advance), and be aware the site carries standard Recreation.gov change and cancellation rules: a $10 service fee applies to most changes or cancellations, late cancellations and no-shows have additional penalties, and refunds must generally be requested within 14 days of departure; you can manage reservations online or by calling Recreation.gov at 1-877-444-6777.
