Pineknot Campground sits at about 6,900 feet on the western side of Big Bear Lake, directly at the base of Snow Summit Ski Resort, where a dense cover of fir, pine and oak keeps most sites shaded. The loop holds 47 campsites total; each of those sites is set up to serve either tents or RVs, though the compact, wooded sites and the campground's character make it particularly well suited to tent camping. Every site comes with a picnic table and a metal campfire ring with grill; flush toilets and potable water are available inside the campground, and trash collection bins and a campground host are on-site. There are no electrical or sewer hookups at individual sites, and while a dump station is not in the loop it is available across the lake at nearby Serrano Campground. Firewood can be purchased in the campground, and extra parking is provided just outside the entrance for overflow vehicles or trailers. The campground's location makes it a hub for active recreation: Snow Summit's lift-served mountain biking trails begin at the resort above the campground, and a network of hiking routes of varying difficulty radiates into the surrounding forest. Big Bear Lake is roughly five miles away by road, where a marina supports boating and fishing and calmer options like canoeing and sailing; the lake's cold water means swimming is less common. Beyond those offerings at Pineknot itself, the San Bernardino National Forest supports a broad range of outdoor activities from horseback riding and wildlife viewing to winter sports and off-highway-vehicle routes so plan according to your interests. Reservations are handled through Recreation.gov (booking windows are generally six months in advance for individual sites and 12 months for group sites), and standard change/cancellation rules apply: a $10 service fee is charged for most changes or cancellations, reservations may not be modified beyond the booking window until 18 days after booking, late cancellations can forfeit the first night's use fee in addition to the $10 fee, and no-shows may incur a $20 service fee and loss of fees paid.
