SAN BERNARDINO
Open in Google Maps ↗
Bluff Mesa Group Camp is a single, roomy group site set high in the San Bernardino National Forest at about 6,800 feet, surrounded by mixed conifer and open meadow pockets that let morning sun filter through mature trees. TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1 SITE TYPE BREAKDOWN: 1 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites. The site is designed to handle group gatherings of up to 40 people and eight vehicles; parking surfaces are gravel and the site is reached by a dirt forest road (Forest Road 2N86 off Mill Creek Road/Forest Road 2N10), so expect a more primitive approach rather than paved access. On-site amenities are basic but practical: picnic tables, grills and a communal campfire circle for evening fires, plus vault toilets. There is no drinking water, no utility hookups and no trash collection, so you'll need to bring potable water and plan to pack out waste. The campground sits roughly 45 miles from the city of San Bernardino and under 10 miles from Big Bear Lake, with the Big Bear Discovery Center and its interpretive trails and flush restrooms about a 10-mile drive the other side of the lake. The site is a good springboard for the variety of activities that draw people to this slice of the forest: multiple trailheads for hiking and mountain biking are nearby, rock climbing routes are within reach, and Big Bear Lake less than 10 miles away offers fishing (trout, bluegill, crappie, catfish and largemouth bass), boating and swimming. More broadly, the San Bernardino National Forest supports biking, camping, climbing, fishing, horseback activities, hunting, interpretive programs, OHV riding, wildlife viewing and winter sports, so the campground can be a quiet base for very different seasons and pursuits. This is a reservation-only group facility on Recreation.gov with a typical group booking window of up to 12 months in advance; changes and cancellations generally incur a $10 service fee, and canceling a group overnight reservation within 14 days of arrival will result in the $10 fee plus forfeiture of the first night's use fee. No-shows can be charged up to $20 and forfeit use fees, refunds must be requested within 14 days after departure, and reservation charges will appear on your card as "Recreation.gov 877-444-6777."
