SAN BERNARDINO
Open in Google Maps ↗
Grays Peak Group Campground sits in the Big Bear Lake area of the San Bernardino National Forest, about 45 miles from the city of San Bernardino and roughly five miles from the Big Bear Discovery Center. At 7,132 feet elevation the site occupies a mixed conifer stand with a grassy understory mature trees offer generous shade while nearby open meadows give the campground a more spacious feel. There is a single large group site that accepts both tents and RVs and is sized for up to 40 people and eight vehicles; parking spurs are gravel and there are no utility hookups. The campsite comes equipped with several picnic tables, a central campfire circle and grills, and vault toilets. Note that drinking water and trash collection are not provided, so plan to bring your own water and pack out all refuse. Because only one group site is available, check current reservation and fee information with the Forest Service before you arrive. The campground provides direct access to trail and lake recreation. The Grays Peak Trail begins nearby and runs 3.4 miles to Hanna Flat Campground, climbing steeply for the first mile before easing into a gentler grade; the Butler Peak/Butler Park fire lookout is an easy 1-mile hike or bike from camp. Big Bear Lake is a short drive away for fishing and boating anglers can expect trout, bluegill, crappie, catfish and largemouth bass but swimming is generally discouraged outside designated areas because of cold water temperatures and submerged hazards. For visitor services, interpretive programs and additional trail information the Big Bear Discovery Center is about five miles from camp. The site's combination of a single, sizable group campsite, nearby backcountry and lakeside opportunities, and limited facilities makes it best suited for self-sufficient groups who are prepared to bring water and carry out trash.
