Wild Horse Equestrian Family Camp sits high in San Bernardino National Forest at roughly 7,000 feet, under a canopy of tall pines and framed by steep, rocky slopes that open onto meadows used by the San Gorgonio Wilderness. The campground is strictly for riders only campers with horses may use the site and its location is chosen for immediate access to a web of trails: the nearby Santa Ana River Trail (often ridden as a roughly one-hour loop), connectors that lead toward the Pacific Crest Trail, and trailheads for Fish Creek Meadow, Mission Creek, Dry Lake and South Fork. You'll find fishing in the mountain streams nearby and, some 20 miles down the road, Big Bear Lake for additional water recreation and town services. The riding terrain around Wild Horse is suitable for beginners through intermediate riders, with long stretches of meadow and pine-shaded singletrack that reward a half- or full-day outing from camp. The campground itself has eleven campsites (eight single-family and three doubles), and every site accommodates both tents and RVs; sites include picnic tables and campfire rings with grills. Basic comforts are provided accessible flush toilets, showers and drinking water but parking is limited, so plan accordingly with trailers and rigs. Equestrian facilities are extensive: more than two dozen single-horse corrals, a horse watering station, a staging area and hitching racks make overnighting with stock practical and relatively easy. Reservations are handled through Recreation.gov (you can also call 1-877-444-6777) and many sites are available by advance booking; individual sites are generally bookable six months ahead (group sites up to 12 months). Be aware of the reservation rules: changes or cancellations typically incur a $10 service fee, late cancellations (the day before or day of arrival) can forfeit the first night's fee in addition to the service fee, no-shows may be assessed up to a $20 fee and refunds must be requested within 14 days of departure. For facility-specific questions call the forest at (909) 866-8550.
