Robert W ★ 5 · Aug 2021The cabin was clean, and freshly stocked with wood. The new porch is very well done. Thanks for leaving the skiff on the trail side of the lake. It had been pulled up on shore on rollers, with the plug out. This seems like a good way to store it for maximum utility. I'd suggest a little block and tackle anchored to a tree to help pull the boat out, if you're in a party of less than three people.

Suloia Lake Cabin occupies a single, small developed site on the western shore of Suloia Lake, about 30 air miles northwest of Sitka on Chichagof Island within the West Chichagof-Yakobi Wilderness Area. The 12-by-14-ft Pan-abode style cabin donated by the Carl Eurich family in memory of their son and replacing an older structure on the east shore is open generally from late April through mid-November and is reached by floatplane only (roughly a 20-minute flight from Sitka when weather allows). The cabin sleeps up to six on two double bunks and two single bunks but does not provide mattresses or cooking gear; inside you'll find a wood stove, table with benches, a cooking counter and cupboard, broom and an axe or splitting maul. An outhouse stands nearby and a small, heavy square-bowed skiff is provided for on-water access; a long-shaft 2 10 hp outboard will improve the skiff's usefulness but is not supplied. Practical notes: water from the lake or a nearby inlet must be treated before use (bringing your own water is recommended), every person in the skiff should wear a Coast Guard approved PFD, be sure the plug is in before launching, and when you leave pull the plug and tie the boat high on shore so it doesn't fill with rain. The site inventory records one total campsite (1), listed as both RV and tent site in the database, though this location is accessible only by air and is best used as a walk-on cabin stay rather than vehicle camping. The setting is reflective of this corner of the Tongass: dense cedar, spruce and hemlock forest down to a small gravel beach, a lake at about 225 feet elevation roughly two miles long by a half mile wide, and forested ridges climbing to about 2,600 feet. Suloia Lake offers quiet backcountry fishing for rainbow trout and Dolly Varden (fishing is often slow) and nearby deer hunting opportunities; limited hiking exists in the area the Suloia Trail connects Suloia Bay to the old cabin site on the east shore but there is no trail between the old and current cabins and shoreline travel is often brushy with little beach. Brown bears frequent the area, so carry bear-aware precautions, pack out garbage, and bring rain gear, boots, sleeping bags and pads, your own stove, pots and utensils, toilet paper, a lantern, a fire extinguisher and other self-sufficiency items. Reservations have a strict modification policy: only one change to the start or end date is allowed per reservation; after that, changes require canceling and rebooking, so plan and confirm your floatplane and travel arrangements carefully.
