Allan Point Cabin sits on the south-facing shore of Halleck Island in upper Nakwasina Sound, about 16 miles north of Sitka, and offers a rugged, waterside base for saltwater fishing, deer hunting and wildlife viewing. The two-story, 20-by-20 Pan Abode style cabin was built in 1993 and looks out over Nakwasina Sound from a large front deck and second-floor balconies; it is set at the edge of tall hemlock and spruce forest with nearby stands of alder and younger spruce where harvesting occurred in the 1960s. Access is by floatplane (roughly 10 minutes from Sitka) or by boat (about 30 minutes), year-round when weather allows, but both approaches are tide-dependent so check NOAA tide predictions for Sitka before you go and use current charts to avoid dangerous rocks on the east side of the bay. Brown bears frequent the area, so bring appropriate bear-safety gear and follow local guidance; guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety. For hunting and fishing, consult the Alaska Department of Fish and Game for permits and seasons. The cabin sleeps up to 15 people in a configuration of one single bunk on the main level and an open loft with one single and two double bunks on the second level; an oil heating stove is provided but oil is not supplied. Facilities are basic: a cooking counter, table and benches inside, and an outhouse outside; water is available from a small stream about 200 feet west of the cabin but should be treated before use, and bringing your own water is recommended. Visitors must bring many essentials sleeping bags and pads, a cooking stove, pots, pans, plates and utensils, toilet paper, a lantern, garbage bags, a fire extinguisher and fire starter and rubber boots are recommended. Guests should also bring #1 diesel fuel (about 10 gallons for a three-day stay, more or less depending on season) for the stove. A mooring buoy is available to cabin guests and other forest users on a first-come, first-served basis (it's anchored with a 4,200-lb concrete block and 90 feet of 7/8-inch chain; mariners must judge suitability for their craft); note that cabin reservation does not confer exclusive use of the buoy. The site is listed as a single campsite (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1; SITE TYPE BREAKDOWN: 1 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites) and the reservation system allows only one change to start or end dates after that you must cancel and rebook to change dates again.
