Piper Island Cabin sits on a small island inside Schulze Cove on the north side of Fish Bay, about 30 miles north of Sitka on the northwest coast of Baranof Island. The 16-by-16-foot modified A-frame, built in 1994 by volunteers from the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station and local Sitka residents, overlooks a sandy beach and the fringe of coastal forest; brown bears frequent the area, so visitors should plan accordingly and store food properly. The site is remote and reachable only by private boat or floatplane expect roughly a 90-minute boat trip or a 20-minute flight from Sitka and you should check local tide tables before you go. Recreational opportunities at the cabin include beachcombing along the sand, wildlife viewing, saltwater fishing and crabbing, and seasonal deer hunting; the cabin is one of the Tongass's off-grid overnight cabins and is available year-round when weather permits. The cabin sleeps up to seven people with an open loft (accessed by a vertical ladder) plus one double and one single plywood bunk on the main level; there are no mattresses provided. Basic amenities on site are an oil stove for heat (fuel not supplied), a dining table and benches, a cooking counter, broom, a large skylight over the dining area, and an outhouse. There is no reliable water source at Piper Island the nearest stream is on Baranof Island about a half-mile away by boat so treat any water before use and bring your own supply. Visitors must bring #1 diesel (generally about 10 gallons for a three-day stay, varying by season), sleeping bags and pads, cooking stove and cookware, plates and utensils, toilet paper, lantern, garbage bags, fire extinguisher, fire starter, rain gear and boots. A single mooring buoy is available on a first-come, first-served basis (4200-lb concrete block with 90 feet of 7/8-inch stud link chain); the buoy is not exclusively reserved with the cabin and mariners are responsible for judging its suitability for their craft. There is one site listed for the cabin (total campsites: 1, recorded as 1 both RV sites & tent sites), and reservation changes for Alaska cabins are limited to one modification of start or end date after that you must cancel and rebook.
