Appleton Cove Cabin sits on the flat, south-facing shoreline of Appleton Cove on Baranof Island, about 30 air miles (roughly 25 minutes by floatplane) or 50 boat miles (about two hours by boat) north of Sitka. The Forest Service lists one campsite for this listing (total campsites: 1) and classifies it as both an RV site and a tent site, though the lodging provided is a single one-room cabin built in 1992 that sleeps five on one double plywood bunk and three single plywood bunks (no mattresses). The cabin faces a dense stand of hemlock and spruce with views of nearby hills and the Peril Strait corridor; because it sits at shoreline level, occasional winter freezes of the cove can prevent access, so travel is weather-dependent and visitors should plan accordingly. Reservations are required and subject to the standard Alaska-cabin policy that allows only one change per reservation (a modification of start or end date); after that one change you must cancel and re-book any further adjustments. Inside, the cabin is basic but functional: a table and benches, a cooking counter, a cupboard, a broom and an oil stove for heat. Visitors must bring mattresses or sleeping bags and pads, a cooking stove and cookware, dishes and utensils, food, toilet paper, a lantern, garbage bags, a fire extinguisher and fire starter, plus rubber boots and rain gear. The stove uses #1 diesel plan on about 10 gallons for a typical three-day stay, more or less depending on season and water is available from the stream behind the cabin but should be treated before use (bringing your own supply is recommended). A mooring buoy is available on a first-come, first-served basis (it is not reserved exclusively with the cabin) and is anchored with a 4,200-lb concrete block and 90 feet of 7/8-inch stud link chain; mariners must judge whether that system is suitable for their vessel. Recreational options right from the cabin include saltwater fishing for Dolly Varden and pink, chum and coho salmon, seasonal deer hunting (check Alaska Department of Fish and Game for permits and seasons), hiking and mountain biking on nearby isolated logging roads (which are rugged and not directly connected to the cabin), off-highway vehicle use, and marine wildlife viewing; consult the Sitka B-4 USGS topo for local navigation and review bear- and water-safety guidance before you go.
