Lake Eva Cabin sits on the north-eastern side of Baranof Island, about 27 air miles northeast of Sitka; the floatplane hop from Sitka takes roughly 25 minutes one-way when weather allows. The lake itself is 1.7 miles long, sits at about 194 feet elevation, and is framed by spruce and hemlock with snow-capped peaks visible to the southwest. As the only rentable site at this location (there is one combined RV/tent site listed in the reservation system), the cabin makes a base for fishing, short hikes and water travel: the Lake Eva Hanus Bay Trail runs about a mile to saltwater and can be reached by boat from the cabin (expect some obstacles on the trail and occasional tour groups), and anglers will find cutthroat and Dolly Varden in the lake year-round with the best fishing from April through late June. The outlet stream brings a spring run of steelhead in April June, sockeye in mid-July August, and coho in September October. Wildlife is present deer and brown bear inhabit the area so guests should follow bear-safety precautions and be prepared for typical Alaska backcountry conditions. Note that the lake typically freezes from December through early May, during which floatplanes cannot land, so plan travel accordingly and consult local tide tables and maps (USGS Sitka B-4) before departing. The cabin is a primitive Pan-abode style shelter outfitted with wooden bunks, a table, benches, a cooking counter, cupboard and an oil stove for heat; accessible features include a boardwalk, picnic table, dock and an accessible outhouse. Water is available from the lake or a nearby inlet stream, but there are no mattresses or cooking utensils provided guests must bring sleeping bags, pads, a camp stove and fuel, cooking gear, lantern, plates and utensils, food, toilet paper and garbage bags, plus raingear and boots. The stove uses #1 diesel: plan to bring roughly 10 gallons for a three-day stay (more or less depending on season) in an FAA-approved container or jerry can secured in a non-tip box. A skiff with oars is provided for cabin guests only (bring personal flotation devices); a 2 10 HP long-shaft outboard will improve range but is not supplied. Practical housekeeping notes: be sure the plug is in before launching the skiff, tie it well up onshore and pull the plug before leaving to avoid filling with rainwater. Reservations have limited flexibility only one change to the start or end date is permitted per reservation; after that you must cancel and rebook and for charter or floatplane arrangements contact the Sitka Convention and Visitors Bureau (907-747-5940, www.sitka.org).
