Tad K ★ 5 · Oct 2025We had a great trip. Went fishing in the skiff. One oar's handle is broken off so the oar is only half as long.
Josef C ★ 5 · Oct 2021Bring a chainsaw. A lot of blown down trees on the road after windstorm. Few hrs of cutting but well worth it. Cabin nice and wood in shed. Wife and I had a great time staying there. We will be back I’m sure.

Sitkoh Lake West Cabin sits on the northwest shore of Sitkoh Lake on southeastern Chichagof Island, about a 30-minute floatplane ride (roughly 35 air miles) northeast of Sitka. The lake itself lies at 194 feet elevation, stretches about 2.5 miles long and a half-mile wide, and is hemmed by forested mountains that rise to near 2,500 feet. Old-growth spruce and hemlock stand close to the waterline with muskeg and open meadows to the east; salmonberries and blueberries are common in season. The lake supports cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden, and Sitkoh Creek at the lake's east end hosts steelhead in spring, pink and sockeye salmon in July August and coho in August September. Outdoor opportunities near the cabin include fishing, hiking the rough 4.3-mile Sitkoh Creek route toward Sitkoh Bay (trail condition is poor), hunting for deer and waterfowl, berry picking, off-highway vehicle travel on remnants of logging roads, and wildlife viewing brown bears are known to frequent the area. If you want to approach overland rather than by plane, the other option is a boat to False Island in Peril Strait followed by travel on the False Island road system (the Forest Service maps show Roads 7540, 7544 and 75442); distances vary by route and this mode of access is recommended only for those familiar with the terrain. The cabin is a single Forest Service site (the official record shows one campsite, listed for both RV and tent use), but the developed lodging is a 12-by-14-foot Pan-abode-style wood cabin that sleeps up to six on two double bunks and two single bunks there are no mattresses or cooking utensils provided. Interior amenities include a wood stove, table with benches, cooking counter and cupboard; you must bring sleeping bags/pads, a cooking stove, pots/pans/utensils, food, toilet paper, lantern, garbage bags and rain gear. A nearby creek supplies water that must be treated; bringing your own is recommended. Outside, you'll find an outhouse, an outdoor screened cooler box and a small heavy square-bowed skiff (bring or rent a long-shaft 2 10 hp outboard if you want power); everyone in the skiff should wear a Coast Guard approved PFD, and the Forest Service advises tying the skiff well on shore and pulling the plug before leaving. Visitors are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety; the site is seasonally accessible (generally mid-April through October when the lake is ice-free). Note the reservation policy: only one change to dates is allowed per reservation after that you must cancel and rebook for additional changes.
