“I know this cabin well and it is always a treat to visit.. My only recommendation is there was little to know firewood and what was there, was too wet..”
“The cabin was clean and tidy. The only downside was that the available firewood was fairly wet. It might be a good idea for the Sitka Ranger district to put their aluminum drop-bow boats to use and replenish the woodshed with some seasoned rounds of firewood.”
“Cabin was in great shape. Plenty of wood, stove worked well. Chilly Nov deer hunt. Had to break ice in the morning. ”

Moser Island Cabin sits on the north shore of Moser Island in upper Hoonah Sound, about 48 air miles north of Sitka and just north of Peril Strait. This is a remote, year-round site accessible only by floatplane (roughly 30 minutes from Sitka) or by boat (about two hours, weather permitting), so trip planning needs to include your own transport and contingency time for changing conditions. The small island is forested with spruce and hemlock and at low tide the shoreline near the cabin connects to Chichagof Island; deer, brown bear and waterfowl are common in the area and seals are regularly seen from the shore. Popular activities from the cabin include beachcombing, seal watching, shrimping south and east of the island, crabbing in nearby bays, and fishing local rivers for Dolly Varden and pink and chum salmon; hunting for deer, bear and waterfowl is allowed on Chichagof Island (accessible at low tide). Check Alaska Department of Fish and Game for current hunting and fishing seasons and permits, and consult NOAA tide tables and the USGS Sitka C-6 topographic map before you depart. The shelter itself is a 12' x 14' Pan-abode style wood cabin built in 1991 that sleeps up to six on two double and two single plywood bunks; total site count for the location is one (the cabin/site is listed as providing both RV and tent site classification). Inside you'll find a wood stove, a table with benches, a cooking counter and cupboard, a broom, and an axe or splitting maul; an outhouse sits nearby. Mattresses, cooking utensils and potable water are not provided: bring sleeping bags and pads, a camp stove, pots and pans, plates and utensils, food, toilet paper, lanterns, garbage bags, a fire extinguisher and fire starter, plus rain gear and boots. Water is available from a nearby stream but must be treated before use; guests are encouraged to bring their own water supply. A mooring buoy (4200-lb concrete block with 90 feet of 7/8" stud link chain) is available on a first-come, first-served basis and is not reserved exclusively with the cabin mariners are responsible for assessing whether the buoy and their anchoring system are suitable for their craft. Reservations are accepted but permit only one change to start or end dates per booking; after that, you must cancel and rebook to make additional changes.
