Leah P ★ 5 · Nov 2024Kook Lake Cabin is world class for hunting and fishing! We especially love the wood stove, thank you for allowing several cabins to remain as wood stoves.
Jeff D ★ 3 · Sep 2020Previous users had left quite a mess for us to clean up before we could really “enjoy” the cabin. After about 2 hours work, we got things in order and had a fine weekend at our 24th Tongass fly-in cabin visited. 🙂

Kook Lake Cabin sits on the west end of Kook Lake on Chichagof Island, about 45 miles northeast of Sitka and reachable only by floatplane (roughly 30 minutes from Sitka or Juneau, weather permitting) or by boat to Corner Bay followed by roughly 7 miles on an old logging road and 0.7 miles on the Kook Lake Trail. The surrounding terrain is largely flat spruce and hemlock forest with a sandy beach immediately in front of the cabin; to the north the land rises gradually to about 1,500 feet before gaining alpine terrain, and to the south slopes climb steeply toward 2,500 feet. Brown bears are common in the area, and visitors are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety. The Forest Service inventory lists a single campsite on record (total campsites: 1; site type breakdown: 1 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites), but the on-site overnight option is this one 16-by-16-foot A-frame cabin that functions as the sole managed lodging at Kook Lake. Hikers who like rough, wet trails will find a network of former logging roads to explore; the short 0.7-mile Kook Lake Trail behind the cabin is unmaintained and passes many muskegs before reaching Forest Road 7540, and it can be very muddy and difficult to follow. Anglers can expect year-round cutthroat and Dolly Varden fishing, with sockeye runs in July August and coho in late August early September; seasonal deer and bear hunting occurs in the area (check Alaska Department of Fish and Game for seasons and permits). The cabin itself is simple but serviceable: a wood A-frame with a double plywood bunk on the main level and an upstairs sleeping loft reached by a vertical ladder (no mattresses provided). A wood stove provides heat, and basic furnishings include a table with benches, a cooking counter, a broom, an axe or splitting maul, an outdoor screened cooler box and an outhouse nearby. Water is available from the lake or a nearby stream but must be treated; bringing your own water is recommended. A small heavy square-bowed skiff is provided for lake use, but no motor or personal flotation devices (PFDs) are supplied each person using the skiff should wear a Coast Guard-approved PFD and follow basic boat care (insert plug before launching, pull plug and tie the skiff high on shore when leaving). You must bring your own mattresses or sleeping pads, cooking stove and cookware, food, toilet paper, lantern, garbage bags, fire starter, fire extinguisher and PFDs, and rain gear and rubber boots are strongly recommended. The cabin is available May through November, weather permitting, and reservation rules allow only one change to start or end dates per booking; any further change requires cancelling and rebooking.
