Goulding Lake Cabin sits on the northwest shore of Otter Lake on the western edge of Chichagof Island, about a 50-minute floatplane hop from Sitka or Juneau and is open for visitors from late May through October, weather permitting. The lodging itself is a 16-by-16-foot A-frame with a sleeping loft accessed by a vertical ladder and room for six people; the lower level contains one double-size plywood bunkbed, a table with benches, a cooking counter and cupboard, and a wood stove for heat. The cabin package includes basic tools (an axe or splitting maul), a broom, an outdoor screened cooler box and an outhouse, but it does not include mattresses or cooking gear visitors must bring sleeping bags and pads, a camp stove, pots and utensils, lanterns, toilet paper and other personal supplies. Water is available from a nearby stream and from the lake but must be treated before use, and guests are recommended to bring additional water. Although the campground record lists a single site (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1) categorized as both an RV site and a tent site, the primary lodging on this parcel is the stocked A-frame cabin; floatplane access and the remote setting mean visitors are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety. The setting alternates between open muskegs and densely forested, steep slopes within the West Chichagof-Yakobi Wilderness Area, so a USGS topographic map (Sitka D-7) is essential for exploring nearby lakes and high alpine meadows. Otter Lake is connected to Goulding Lake to the east, but no boat is provided at the cabin bringing a packraft or other inflatable/personal watercraft and personal flotation devices is highly recommended for lake travel and fishing. Anglers can expect slow fishing overall: cutthroat trout are catchable year-round below the falls and in the lower lake west of the cabin, Dolly Varden are present year-round, and steelhead and coho appear seasonally (check the Alaska Department of Fish and Game for permits and seasons). Wildlife viewing and photography are strong draws here, but brown bears frequent the area, so plan food storage and bear-aware practices accordingly. Note reservation rules for Alaska cabins: only one change to the start or end date is allowed per reservation after that single change you must cancel and rebook to make further modifications.
