North Beach Cabin sits on the north beach of Shelikof Bay on Kruzof Island, about 20 miles northwest of Sitka. The small 16' x 16' A-frame was built in 1993 by volunteers from the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station in Sitka and local residents and offers coastal forest character hemlock and spruce backing a sandy shoreline with direct views of the Gulf of Alaska's surf. The site is remote: a 45-minute boat ride from Sitka to Mud Bay followed by roughly a 7.5-mile walk or off-highway vehicle trip on old logging roads brings you across Iris Creek and through meadows to the cabin; the cabin can also be reached by helicopter at lower tides. Terrain around the cabin is relatively flat and easy to explore; nearly 40 miles of old logging roads in the area are open to hiking, mountain biking and OHV riding. Onsite beachcombing, photography, wildlife viewing (brown bear frequent the area), hunting and fair fishing for Dolly Varden, coho and pink salmon in local streams are common draws check the Alaska Department of Fish and Game for current seasons and permit requirements. Note that the Forest Service records a single verified overnight site for this listing (the campsite data lists one site categorized as both RV and tent site). The cabin sleeps up to eight on a double plywood bunk and a sleeping loft reached by a vertical ladder; it has a table with benches, a cooking counter, broom and dustpan, an outhouse nearby and an oil stove for heat. The cabin does not supply mattresses, cooking utensils or heating oil: visitors must bring #1 diesel fuel (about 10 gallons is recommended for a three-day stay, more or less depending on season), sleeping bags and pads, a camp stove, pots and pans, plates and utensils, food, toilet paper, lantern, garbage bags, a fire extinguisher and fire starter, plus rain gear and boots. Water is available from a creek about one-third mile away but must be treated before use; bringing your own water is recommended. The cabin is available year-round, weather permitting, and visitors are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety. Reservation policy allows only one change to start or end dates per reservation; after that you must cancel and rebook to make additional changes.
