“We love this cabin! The creek next to it always flourishes with wildlife. The trailhead to edgecumbe is right behind and the fire wood is stocked well and there is lots of beach combing to be done. ”
“There is plenty of wood! If you would like to cross the creek, hip waders are recommended, makes it a lot easier! Enjoyed our stay so much. Very peaceful and plenty of places to hike and walk along the beaches! ENJOY! ”

Fred's Creek Cabin sits on the southeastern shore of Kruzof Island about 10 miles west of Sitka, with the cabin's front facing Sitka Sound and Fred's Creek emptying into saltwater just north of the structure. The surrounding terrain is fairly flat and cloaked in spruce and hemlock, and the shoreline is a mix of pumice and volcanic rock shaped by steady surf. Mount Edgecumbe, a 3,200-foot dormant volcano, rises nearby and the Mount Edgecumbe Trail a 6.7-mile route that winds through muskeg and forest to the volcano's cone begins close enough that hikers often pass near the cabin on their way to the trailhead; the final approach to the cone becomes very steep but rewards hikers with wide views on clear days. On the water side you can watch breaking surf, search the beach for unusual pumice and volcanic features, and often spot marine life: humpback whales show up offshore in early spring and late fall, and sea otters, sea lions, puffins and other seabirds are commonly seen; brown bears also frequent the area. Hunting is possible for deer; for seasons and permit information consult the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The cabin itself is a 15-by-18-foot Pan-Abode style wood building that sleeps up to eight people with plywood bunks downstairs and a full sleeping loft reached by a staircase. Amenities include a wood stove for heat, an axe or splitting maul, a table and benches, a cooking counter, an outhouse, and a front deck; mattresses and cooking utensils are not provided, so visitors must bring sleeping bags and pads, a cooking stove and cookware, plates and utensils, food, toilet paper, a lantern, garbage bags, a fire extinguisher and fire starter, plus raingear and rubber boots. Water is available from Fred's Creek but must be treated before use bringing your own water is recommended. Access is primarily by boat (about a 30-minute run from Sitka) and a mooring buoy is available on a first-come, first-served basis; the buoy system uses a 4,200-lb concrete block with 90 feet of 1-5/8-inch stud link chain, and buoy use is not exclusive to cabin reservations mariners must assess whether the anchoring is appropriate for their vessel and note there is no protected anchorage. Local wave action and pumice-rock surf can make beach landings dangerous or impossible; consult NOAA tide tables, avoid approaching while the tide is turning, and consider hiring a local charter (Sitka Convention & Visitors Bureau: 907-747-5940) if you're inexperienced. The cabin is available year-round, weather permitting; there is one designated site associated with the cabin (listed as suitable for both RV and tent use), and reservation changes are limited to a single modification of start or end dates after that you must cancel and rebook to make further changes.
