“Everything we needed and more. Facilities were in great order”
“Great little cabin. The wood stove is currently out of service, tried to start a fire but no smoke is exiting the chimney. Bummer after over an inch of rain fell the day we arrived. ”
“ Great area and lots to explore behind the cabin. ”

Kanga Bay Cabin sits above a sloping sand-and-pebble beach on the southeast side of a small cove off Redoubt Bay on Baranof Island, about 12 air miles south of Sitka. Built in 1998 by local volunteers, the wooden, paneled cabin measures 15 by 17 feet and sleeps up to six on one double and one single plywood bunk on the main level plus two single plywood bunks in an open loft reached by a staircase; a large front deck gives a clear view over the cove and, on good days, the snow-capped peaks across Redoubt Bay. Facilities are basic but functional: a wood stove for heat, a table with benches, a cooking counter, broom and an axe or splitting maul are provided, and an outhouse sits nearby. There is only one campsite here (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1) and it's categorized as (SITE TYPE BREAKDOWN: - 1 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites); the site is available year-round, weather permitting, but visitors must arrange their own floatplane or boat transport (about a 10-minute flight or 40-minute boat ride from Sitka) and be prepared for a remote, self-sufficient stay. Reservation changes are limited: only one change to a reservation's start or end date is allowed; after that you must cancel and rebook for any additional date changes. The bay is a straightforward base for fishing and boating: Redoubt Lake, about a 30-minute boat ride away, produces sockeye and coho salmon in August, and Goddard Hot Springs lies roughly 20 minutes to the south by boat. A mooring buoy is available on a first-come, first-served basis (configured with a 4,200-lb concrete block and 90 feet of 7/8-inch stud link chain); buoy use is not exclusive to the cabin reservation, and mariners are responsible for judging whether the anchoring system suits their vessel. There is a freshwater stream about 100 feet from the cabin, but water must be treated before drinking and bringing your own is recommended. The cabin does not provide mattresses or cooking gear, so you should bring sleeping bags and pads, a cooking stove with pots, pans, plates and utensils, food, toilet paper, a lantern, garbage bags, a fire extinguisher, fire starter, raingear and rubber boots. Check local tide tables before you depart and consult the Alaska Department of Fish and Game for current fishing and hunting permits and seasons; visitors are responsible for their own safety and supplies while staying at this remote Tongass Forest cabin.
